People always ask what ‘Since 1986’ means on our business logo, the first guess is that this was the first year we were in business, but it was actually the year that Uwe Theis, owner and operator of Uwe’s Bakery & Deli a division of Old World Foods, LLC, began working as a Baker in Germany.
Uwe grow up in the small village of Münsterappel, outside of Bad Kreuznach, Germany, where family owned many different businesses. One of the family businesses was a butcher shop and the other, a catering service, and this is where he grew to love and appreciate good food.
After graduating school in 1986 he began his first apprenticeship as a baker, and because he wanted to learn the finer side of baking, in 1988 he took a second apprenticeship as a pastry chef. Before the age of twenty, he earned two associates degrees; in 1989 as a baker and again in 1990 as a pastry chef and in 1991 he finally became a Master Baker.
In 2006 Uwe brought his skills and turn of the century recipes over from Germany to introduce Americans to real bread, and a mere ten years later, here he is with his own Bakery and Deli. Uwe is currently in the process of training 2 Baker’s, teaching them the way that he learned so many years ago, back in the old country.
